BigBasket has partnered with the National Restaurant Association of India and Retail Association of India to offer jobs to those laid off due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
The online grocer is offering temporary job opportunities for restaurant staff and retail employees registered on these platforms. The Bengaluru-based company has also set up a call centre to scale this initiative rapidly at a time when grocery delivery is witnessing a massive spike in orders and businesses are struggling with manpower to fulfil deliveries.
“BigBasket is offering upwards of Rs 500 per day…which is higher than what these boys usually earn,” said a restaurateur privy to the initiative.
BigBasket Chief Executive Officer Hari Menon also confirmed the initiative. “Manpower continues to be our biggest challenge and it is now getting better every day,” he said.
For e-grocers and e-commerce companies including Amazon and Flipkart, hiring on-ground staff has been the biggest challenge after migrant workers fled to their native places from various states due to the ongoing lockdown.
Last week, ET had reported about a 80-90% labour shortage that e-commerce firms are facing as workers returned to their hometowns or are unable to show up at work due to transport scarcity and police harassment.
