Uber has laid off 600 people or a fourth of its 2,600 workforce in India across levels and teams on Tuesday. The ride-hailing app confirmed the development.
The layoffs come a week after homegrown rival Ola slashed its headcount by a third, affecting 1,400 employees.
“Maximum employees in the core mobility and head office have been impacted with little impact on the global technology teams,” said a person in the know.
Two people that ET spoke to confirmed that employees in corporate headquarters have been impacted including customer and driver support teams, business development, legal, finance, policy, and marketing. A part of the company’s global technology centre teams has also been impacted, but these were primarily employees in roles catering to the international market which are redundant, they said.
