The demand for products on e-commerce platforms is likely to trend higher as the number of Covid-19 positive cases in India continues to rise and as consumers feel safer about having goods delivered home rather than step out.
The recovery in demand on e-commerce marketplaces such as Flipkart and Amazon has been estimated at around 70-80% in volume terms, compared to before the outbreak, and seems stable for now, industry executives told ET.
A survey by community platform LocalCircles has shown that there is still unmet consumer demand for online shopping, three weeks after the government removed restrictions on shipping products by e-commerce firms.
According to the survey respondents, 36% reported that they were yet to place orders for goods they needed on online platforms, while a further 23% reported that they had already shopped online, but would shop some more.
Another 36% said they had already shopped online and would not place any further orders. The survey which received 16,000 responses from citizens located across 231 districts.
“While overall this pending demand is good news for ecommerce platforms, the complaints against ecommerce platforms are also on the rise,” LocalCircles said.
The type of products consumers sought to buy online remains in line with what marketplaces have been reporting as fast moving. Respondents reported that they would buy gadgets, office and school supplies, home furnishings, appliances, fashion and toys.
