Chinese online retailer Club Factory, which was embroiled in a controversy, for allegedly sending goods to Indian consumers directly from China under the guise of gifts, has now been accused of selling Schedule H drugs on its platform without medical prescription.
The office of the joint commisioner of Food & Drug Adminstration in Greater Mumbai in a letter has written to Food & Drug Control Adminstration in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, to investigate the drug licence of Sixsense Retailer in Surat, who supplied drugs on online orders placed on Club Factory to a consumer, Deepak Patel in Mumbai, without any prescription. It was mentioned in the letter that the drug licence of Sixsense Retailer was not furnished in the bill. TOI has reviewed a copy of the letter.
Schedule H class of drugs cannot be purchased over the counter without the prescription of a qualified doctor under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945.
When contacted, a Club Factory spokesperson said selling drugs is against the company’s policy and third-party sellers found listing such products are immediately barred from its platform.
“We are working towards implementing measures to prevent the listing of such products under disguise in other categories. We are committed to work with concerned stakeholders and investigators to safeguard the interests of our valued users. We are also open to cooperating with other e-commerce players facing similar issues to curb such malpractices,” the spokesperson told TOI.
