With the ‘new normal’ being to live with the virus, Amazon India is pushing its private brands to cash in on the growing demand for products like face shields, digital thermometers, sanitizers of mobile phones, PPE kits, disposable gloves, and DIY (do-it-yourself) smart sanitizer dispensers.
Based on global sale patterns of best selling items, Amazon‘s Accelerator–which helps create stealth private labels for small manufactures along with supplying products for its own brands — is working with local sellers to source these products to sell in India. TOI has reviewed the list being shared with Amazon Accelerator members which include several details including tweaking the pricing for the Indian market.
With economic activity gradually picking up, products like these are expected to be in demand as people take precautionary measures as they return to old routines. Merchants working with Amazon Accelerator said they are tapping manufacturers in India as well as in China to procure some of these products.
“The discussions have begun since last week. Amazon is asking us to procure more of these items as the likelihood of these items being sold in the near-term is high, based on global trends. We are looking to get these made in India, instead of China, for now,” one of the Accelerator members said.
“Given the sustained need for safety, we continue to explore relevant products” an Amazon India spokesperson said.
The accelerator was launched in 2018 by Amazon India, and it has built a host of brands like Diverse, Skrubble, Syclone and Flybot spread across segments. Some of these members of Accelerator also sell their products under Amazon’s own brands like Solimo and Symbol.
As reported by TOI last year, Amazon India works with select sellers to be part of this programme, which has been scaling up since 2019. Owing to the wide reach of Amazon’s platform, the e-tailer gets the option to acquire these brands at a mutually agreed pre-decided price. One of the other riders by Amazon is also that these brands cannot be sold on any other marketplace globally, unless Amazon has given written permission for a brand to do so.
