Amazon Prime Video is expanding its India slate of original series by announcing six new series and a returning series.
This is part of the company’s global launch of 20 new and returning international series across seven countries including UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, Japan, and Mexico. Amazon said all the six announced series will be available to Prime subscribers in India and across 200 countries and territories.
“We’re delighted to announce the commissioning of more than twenty new and returning series, to be produced in seven countries across three continents around the world. We know that customers watching Prime Video everywhere want to see authentic stories, set in their own countries, and to invest in characters that can reflect their own experiences and diversity,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “We’re excited and committed to amplifying the voices of storytellers from all over the world and to bring their visions to life for our viewers worldwide.”
Among the newly announced series include a romantic musical ‘Bandish Bandits’ created by Still and Still Media Collective and a crime thriller ‘The Last Hour’. Bandish Bandits is expected to be available later this year, while Last Hour has gone into production last month, the company said in a statement.
Apart from this, the tech giant has commissioned an untitled drama thriller series produced by actor Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Sharma’s Clean Slate Films; an untitled drama series from director Ali Abbas Zafar (of Sultan & Tiger Zinda Hai fame); and a comedy reality series produced by OML (Only Much Louder).
OML is also creating a Tamil spinoff of its Amazon original comedy reality series Comicstaan that debuted in July 2018 and was one of the top watched series on the platform last year.
Another top watched Prime original Mirzapur is returning for a second season and will go into production later this year, the company said in a statement.
“As well as delighting local audiences, we’re excited to showcase the work of these talented local writers, directors, producers, and actors to be enjoyed by an international audience of more than 100 million Prime members worldwide” said James Farrell, Head of International Originals, Amazon Studios.
The move comes at a time when rival Netflix is also ramping up its original content slate in the country. It announced eight new original films and a new original series in November last year.
Amazon however has taken a lead in terms of regional content and localization. Apart from offering its service in six Indian languages, the company also launched its first Tamil original series in December last year.
